Good for Nothing’s Background

Good for Nothing is an international movement with 48 verified chapters that host online and offline events to support the change-makers in our communities. The idea of GFN is simple: bring creative energy, ideas, and skills to those already innovating on social issues but doing so with limited resources.

In 2015, Good for Nothing Fargo officially launched and hosted its first ever “gig,” an event in which creatives got together to provide pro bono design, development, and general marketing services to non-profits in the F-M community.

Since the 2017 AAF-ND season, Good for Nothing Fargo has been managed by our board of directors and effectively absorbed by AAF-ND’s “public service committee.” We continue to host annual 24-hour gigs that bring our community’s talented marketers together to support non-profits in need of marketing services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does "24-hour" mean overnight and everything?

Fret not… this is not an overnight volunteer event! We call it a “24-hour gig” because all efforts happen in a 24-hour period. Volunteers and non-profits will meet for a couple of hours on that Friday evening to meet one another and determine who is going to work on which project. Everyone takes off for the night and then regroups the next morning to get started on their work.

You DO NOT spend the night at the event. Even if you wanted to, we ask that you go home and sleep in your own bed.

How do I know if my skillset will be helpful?

No matter what your unique skills are, we are more than confident they will help make a real impact on the non-profits who participate.

Here is a list of just some of the skills we find helpful: layout and graphic design, copywriting, content creation, marketing strategy, photography, videography, video editing, event planning, social media expertise, web design, web development, research, writing, email marketing… to name a few.

How much experience do I need to have to volunteer?

We want volunteers of any and all skill levels! Whether you’ve worked as a marketing professional for decades or just casually dipped your toes in the creative world, you’re skills can help non-profits immensely.

Will food be provided?

You bet! We’ll have snacks and drinks available throughout the entire event PLUS we’ll have pizza on Friday evening and breakfast and lunch brought in on Saturday. Don’t worry – you won’t be hungry (or thirsty).
